NRA Women On Target Instructional Shooting Program

An introduction to the shooting sports for women

NRA Women On Target Instructional Shooting Clinic is designed to introduce women to the shooting sports. If women are curious about firearms, whether for personal defense or to learn a new sport, Women On Target® is the perfect place to start.

These instructional shooting clinics are designed to teach you firearm safety and the fundamentals of marksmanship, giving you the confidence you need to safely handle and operate a firearm upon completion.

Women will have the experience of shooting pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns.

Women On Target® clinics are available only to women — it’s a safe and friendly environment whether you’re picking up a gun for the very first time or are just brushing off some dust and need a little refresher. You will immediately feel at ease, and will be provided with a hands-on, one-of-a-kind experience.

Lunch is provided during the program.

What To Bring

  • Eye and Ear protection.

We have loaners available if you don’t have your own.

Acceptable Attire

AVGC requires closed toed shoes and high collared shirts. No open or scoop neck tops, tank tops, or polo shirts are permitted. Loose fitting, layered clothing is ideal.

No experience or equipment is necessary to participate. You will have a one to one coach/instructor at your side.

*Pre-registration is required and fees are refundable if requested one week prior to the event. The clinic is limited to the first 24 to register/pay. No emailed RSVP’s will be accepted.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is a course conducted in the classroom and on the range under the guidance and supervision of certified NRA instructors.

The course is intended for all regardless of previous shooting experience. The goal of the course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

Topics include: safe gun handling and storage; ammunition knowledge; fundamentals of pistol shooting; selecting; purchasing; and maintaining a pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.

On the range, you will learn range protocol; proper handling; loading and unloading procedures; application of pistol shooting fundamentals; shooting positions

Students receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules card, and the NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a NRA Basics Of Pistol Shooting certificate.

Required Equipment

  • Handgun: Semi-Automatic or Revolver
  • 200 Rounds of Factory New Ammunition (No Reloads or Steel Core)
  • Eye and Ear Protection (Electronic is preferred)

NRA Defensive Pistol Shooting Class

This is an Advanced Course. You must have completed the NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Course before taking this course.

PREREQUISITE: Must have completed NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Course.

The NRA Defensive Pistol Course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset.

The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence.

As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following:

  • How to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm Basic principles of concealment
  • The difference between cover and concealment
  • Drawing from the holster
  • Levels of mental awareness
  • Developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection
  • Clearing common stoppages
  • Use of pocket pistols, and more

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, safe gun handling brochure and the NRA Marksmanship booklet.

Required Materials:

  • Handgun
  • Strong side holster( Should be kydex or leather, must not collapse on itself, must fit your gun and completely cover the trigger guard)
  • Gun Belt (no flimsy belts allowed. It must support your equipment)
  • 3 magazines/speed-loaders
  • Magazine pouch or way to carry extra magazines
  • Cover garment (jacket, vest, shirt etc.)
  • 300 rounds of ammunition – No reloads or steel core
  • Eye & Ear Protection (electronic ear pro is recommended)

Suggested Supplies: Pen, pencil and paper for note taking.

Bring a sack lunch and snacks. We provide bottled water. Soda and snacks are available for $1.00 each. There is a microwave in the classroom for your use.

No tank tops, v-neck or scoop neck t-shirts. Crew-neck style t-shirts are recommended. A baseball style cap is highly recommended. Closed toe shoes are required. Most of your time will be spent out on the firing line. This is a rain or shine class. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress accordingly for the weather conditions.

This class includes all the gun cleaning supplies, safety supplies and will be an instructor directed, hands on experience for your firearm!

THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL LEARN… Why cleaning is critical to the firearm’s operation, longevity, and dependability – Preparation for cleaning and exactly what’s needed- How to break down your specific firearm (field strip) – What to clean and why it is SO important to clean it – How and what to inspect on your firearm during cleaning – What to oil and why it is SO important to oil it – How to put it all back together – How to check function following cleaning.

All you will need to bring is 1 handgun, and your owner’s manual.

Students will meet at the Apple Valley Gun Club in the Adobe Classroom at 9 am. Please make every effort to arrive a few minutes early, we will start on time. Leave your handgun locked in your vehicle. The first part of our clinic will be in the classroom. We will transfer to the Indoor Range for the actual cleaning clinic. Bring one Handgun per student, (locked in a case), your Owner’s Manual with the section /page marked, addressing takedown or field striping and recommended cleaning.

Clear safety glasses are required and if you don’t have any, a pair will be provided for your use. Your class fee covers a basic cleaning kit/supplies each student will take home.

Dress comfortably and remember, you are cleaning a gun and while unlikely, it is possible to wear a little bit of the process home.
