NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Class

The course is intended for all regardless of previous shooting experience. The goal of the course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

All AVGC firearms training classes and matches are open to the public.

The gate will be unlocked and open when you arrive and will be locked shortly after the event or class starts.
Please arrive on time or early.


This course is offered as both a one day and two day course.  If you are signed up for the two day course, you must attend both days to complete the class.

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is a course conducted in the classroom and on the range under the guidance and supervision of certified NRA instructors.

Topics include: safe gun handling and storage; ammunition knowledge; fundamentals of pistol shooting; selecting; purchasing; and maintaining a pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.

On the range, you will learn range protocol; proper handling; loading and unloading procedures; application of pistol shooting fundamentals; shooting positions

Students receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules card, and the NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a NRA Basics Of Pistol Shooting certificate.

Required Equipment

  • Handgun: Semi-Automatic or Revolver
  • 200 Rounds of Factory New Ammunition (No Reloads or Steel Core)
  • Eye and Ear Protection (Electronic is preferred)
  • Pen, Pencil, Highlighter and notepad

Optional Supplies

  • Sunscreen

Attire

  • Closed toed shoes are required
  • No scoop neck or V-neck shirts are allowed
  • Bring a baseball style hat

Lunch

Bring a lunch. Snacks and sodas are available for 1.00 each. We provide bottled water free of charge. We do have a microwave available.

NO FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION ARE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. THIS INCLUDES CCW and LEO. NO EXCEPTIONS! Leave your firearm and ammunition secured in your locked vehicle until an instructor directs you to retrieve it.

California law requires you to transport your firearm UNLOADED in a locked case.

Classes, training and/or certification are for individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state or local laws.  Individuals who have been convicted of a crime of violence are disqualified.  Student must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Resident with a Green Card in compliance with U.S. Federal ITAR Regulations.
