Junior Programs at the Apple Valley Gun Club

Junior Rifle

  • The Jr Rifle Program is open to ages 8 to 18 years old. This program will teach organized rifle shooting, with a view toward safe gun handling, use and care of firearms, as well as marksmanship.
  • All Participants must attend an Orientation before participating in The Jr Rifle Program. NO Exceptions.
  • All participants are required to wear eye and ear protection. For added safety, a ball cap is recommended to be worn on the firing line.
  • All participants are required to wear closed toe shoes.  No scoop or low-cut shirts will be allowed. A regular tee shirt is recommended. This is for safety.
  • Eye and ear protection must be worn by Participants and Spectators.
  • There is a $25 annual fee for participation.  This covers all ammunition, rifle usage, Awards, Eye and ear protection.
  • There is a $3.00 per night range fee.
  • All participants are required to become a Jr. NRA Member, currently $15.00
  • We will provide .22cal firearms and ammunition or you may bring your own .22cal rifle that has not been modified in anyway. If bringing your own rifle, only bolt action type will be allowed.
  • The Jr Rifle Program will use the Winchester NRA Program which is a skill development program.  The participants will get the Rifle Discipline Patch when they start the program.  As each rating is earned, they will receive a skill rocker, medal, pin and certificate recognizing their achievement. Progression is self-paced with an emphasis on marksmanship rather than speed.
  • There will be Coaches available and Range Safety Officers on the firing line at all times.
  • The Jr. Rifle program meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 6PM. .  Spots are limited.  For more information, please contact Jr Rifle Program Director Ray Jameson to register for an Orientation.  Orientation is by appointment only. Junior Pistol

  • The Jr Pistol Program is open to ages 8 to 18 years old. This program will teach organized pistol shooting, with a view toward safe gun handling, use and care of firearms as well as marksmanship.
  • The program will help develop self- discipline, team play and self-reliance essential to good sportsmanship.
  • All Participants must attend an Orientation before participating in The Jr Pistol Program. NO Exceptions.
  • All participants are required to wear eye and ear protection which we will provide. A ball cap is required to be worn on the firing line.
  • (Electronic ear protection is encouraged but not required)
  • All participants are required to wear closed toe shoes.  No scoop or low cut shirts will be allowed. A regular tee shirt is recommended. This is for safety.

  • Range Safety Officers will always be present .
  • The Jr. Pistol program meets Tuesday nights at 6:00 PM

Junior Trap

Wednesday Nights @ 6:00 pm – Lower Trap Range

Ages – Up to 18

Beginner to Expert – Coaching is available at all levels

What to Bring

$2.00 per round (Average is 2 rounds – $4.00)

Ammunition – 12 gauge or 20 gauge Target Load Shotgun Shells  (2 boxes of 25 shells – 50 shells)

Personal Shotguns can be used or shotguns are available to use on first com first serve basis if a personal shotgun is not brought

What to Expect

Fundamentals of Trap Shooting are taught in a safe environment by experienced coaches

For younger shooters – Proper handling of the shotgun is expected

Parents are not allowed on the line while children are shooting

The last Wednesday night of the month is “game night” – shooters participate in games and drills which sharpen the shooters skills of accuracy and speed

Outside Competition

The Jr. Trap Program is a participant in the “5 Star Jr Trap Series Competition” – with the AVGC Jr Trap Program being 1 of 8 clubs hosting one competition shoot a month (November through July).  More information of the 5 Star Jr Trap program can be found by going to highdesert5star.org
